Why do we wash bath towels? Aren't we clean when we use them?

Okay, now THIS one I can answer. You live in the nice dry West. In Michigan, where everything is damp, anything which contacts the air is vulnerable to either mildew or rust. Shucks, here, you don't even have to USE the bath towel left out for guests and given a week it needs to be washed.
